Advertisers and Marketers
Marketing, advertising and sales are essential to the success of any firm. Owners of small firms may control all aspects of sales, including advertising, marketing, and public relations tasks. Large firms with widely distributed products may delegate these tasks to a vice president. Individual advertising, promotion, and sales managers may take upon other tasks, such as market research and strategy, promotion, pricing and development.

Markeing managers supervise the typically small promotion and advertising staffs. Managers often coordinate business between the small firm and the larger agency to which the firm pays contract dues. Different departments in in-house accounts, creative, and media services require different managers. Account executives determine the advertising and other related needs of the services department, while managing the accounts of particular clients. The creative director guides the development of the ad-presentation and the duties of the creative services department staff. Finally, the media director manages the selection of communication and mass media outlets that will broadcast the advertisement.

Promotion managers direct the promotion staffs of companies, including the coordination of advertising and sales initiatives. Promotional programs that entail telemarketing, internet TV, newspaper, and other methods of media advertising are deemed essential to inform consumers, distributors, and other dealers of their product. Ads may include rebates, coupons, and other discounts to incite consumer demand.

Marketing managers strategize with other development and research managers over how to best market the product in the face of competitors and consumer demand. These managers seek the best markets for their product, whether it is the general public, business, wholesale, and/or government. They match prices with demand to ensure profit maximization and consumer satisfaction. Generally, marketing managers work with all other development and promotional managers in identifying and gauging the most profitable markets.

Public relations managers oversee specialists in charge of publicity programs. (Refer to Handbook for more information on public relations specialists.) Often, public relations managers will deal with crisis management or specialize in a particular field or industry. Healthcare is one example. They utilize every outlet of communication to stay connected with the group who uses their product—these groups include both consumers and stockholders. Public relations managers reinforce the firms mission statement and positions on related fields of interest to the group, such as health or the environment.

Public relations managers also serve as the watchmen for social and political phenomenon / trends that may alter the firm’s future promotional attempts. These managers constantly seek how to best accommodate social groups with the best promotional programs.

Public relations managers also help coordinate inward-oriented, firm labor promotions such as newsletters and financial reports. They generally maintain the relationship between executives and labor groups as they oversee all forms of public contact. They respond to public inquiries in addition to keeping company archives. Other publicity events outside the realm of conventional advertising may include sponsorship or product display parties.

Sales Managers make all of the necessary provisions for effective sales and training. They act as both advisors to sellers and directors of regional and local staffs. They help assess statistical inventories and goals to match sales potential with specific consumer demand. Sales managers work at the ground level to ensure successful product development and profit.
