Capella University was started to help people earn degrees while allowing them to continue working. A former CEO of Tonka, Stephen Shank, wanted to remove the restrictions and limitations of established universities and allow students to participate in classes when convenient for them, in their homes, while traveling, or at remote locations.
Dr. Harold Abel, the former president of three universities, partnered with Shank to begin The Graduate School of America in 1993. The purpose of the university was to provide online doctoral and master’s degrees in human services, management, and education.
The Graduate School of America was granted membership to the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1997. The Higher Learning Commission also awarded the school with accreditation. After receiving accreditation, the university instated the five schools in existence today (psychology, education, technology, human services, and management) and changed its name to Capella University.
Capella University now offers undergraduate and graduate programs to more than 11,000 students. There are over 650 courses in more than 70 areas of specialized study to choose from. Students receiving an education at Capella generally have diverse backgrounds and are typically working adults from not only the United States, but from locations worldwide.
