Fashion Design Degrees

Fashion Design Job Highlights

  • The number of self-employed fashion designers (nearly thirty-three percent) is five times the proportion of all professional occupations
  • All design occupations require creativity on the part of the individual. A bachelor's degree is sufficient while having master's degree will make a designer more competitive.
  • Employment in fashion designer careers is growing rapidly and has thus become increasingly competitive
Fashion Design
Fashion designers combine creative / artistic skills with practical and functional knowledge to create designs for merchandise. This includes design for publications, clothes, and residential living. There are many areas for a fashion designer to specialize in. Clothing and textiles, home interiors, television and film, merchandise displays, floral, medical equipment, and automobiles are but to name a few.

After determining for what purpose a design will have, the fashion designer then researches and defines its features and characteristics. They take into account factors of shape, color, size, and cost. With the usual help of a computer, the designer then draws the basic design illustration. After collaborating with another art director and the client, the details are created using more drawings, computer or structural models, and actual prototype designs. Computer-aided design (CAD) tools are becoming increasingly popular to assist in this design process. This allows designers with greater affordability and time in designing and marketing the product. Computer-aid industrial design (CAID) tools help industrial designers develop computer-readable instructions and designs.
