Programs are offered in nursing, social work, nutrition, physical therapy, medical technology and many other areas.

Overview and highlights for Health Care Administration and Management

  • High earning potential for qualified individuals, but expect long hours
  • Most positions require at least a master’s degree. However some entry-level jobs in smaller centers require only a bachelor’s degree.
  • Home healthcare services and practitioner office work will see the most growth.
  • Those with healthcare service and business management experience will be the best qualified.
The Healthcare industry is just that, an industry. And like all industries, it needs experienced, well-trained management to make it successful. Medical and health service managers oversee all aspects of healthcare services. Specialists manage individual departments, while general managers direct the overall progression of the health service organization.

Because of the quickly evolving nature of healthcare organizations those interested in entering healthcare management must be capable of handling the integration of complex healthcare systems, advances in technology and medicine, job restructuring, as well as the increasing emphasis on preventative care, all maneuvering safely through the tangle of federal regulation. Managers will be expected to increase not only productivity and efficiency, but also the quality of healthcare their facility provides.

Several junior administrators assist large facility administrators in the management of daily affairs. These assistants often oversee surgery, therapy, nursing, medical records and other healthcare areas, while other managers direct non-health divisions (i.e. finances, IT services, and human resources).

Administrators of smaller facilities like nursing homes take on much more of the managerial responsibilities including finance, facility operation, admission, and personnel. Many also play more personal role in the care of residents.

Physical Therapy directors, health information and medical record administrators and other area specific managers usually have specific training in their area that goes beyond general management experience and qualifies them for their position. The specific training is necessary for clinical managers who are responsible for creating and carrying out department policies and objectives as well as for evaluating employee performance, outlining budgets, and collaborating with other supervisors.

While officer managers working for small medical groups often focus solely on the business aspects of an organization, those employed by larger practices, in addition to handling day to day business responsibilities, may assist the physicians in outlining policy and creating and implementing business.

For example, one office manager may handle the billing, planning, budgeting, and personnel coordination for a group of a dozen or so physicians. A larger organization made up of several dozen physicians on the other hand would likely hire a several administrators to cover specific business areas, all lead by a supervising head administrator.

The duties of a medical and health service manager working in a managed care facilities mirror closely the duties of a manager working in a larger organization, though the personnel they oversee may not be as numerous. Also, managers of smaller practices are often more involved in community health education programs and other similar activities.

Many medical and health service managers have responsibility over several health system facilities. These facilities provide a broad spectrum of patient care, including inpatient and outpatient care.

Working as a medical and health services managers often means working long shifts. Because hospitals, emergency rooms and other similar facilities are open twenty-four hours a day managers have to be available any time they are needed. In addition, managers often travel for conferences and meetings as well as to check up on associated clinics. Managers may share office space with other employees, and some may have their own private offices. Mangers spend much of their day on their feet, coordinating the work of their facility.
