Business Science is the study of how businesses operate, and how they can be optimized. It differs from a Bachelor of Commerce or a degree in Business Administration in that it is more focused on analysis, interpretation of data and strategic thinking, and is at once more theoretical and more in-depth than either of these two other degrees.

If you’re good with numbers, you like to think strategically, and you enjoy using technology to solve problems, then Business Science could open up some career options for you.  You could be an analyst, software designer, management consultant or any number of high-level professional careers.

What Will I Study?

A degree in Business Science is at once both a business degree and a science degree.  You may do complex financial math and economic theory, so you should have some confidence in your ability to take on these challenges.

Some of the courses you might study include:

  • Applied Financial Math
  • Statistics and Applied Statistics
  • Computer Science and Information Systems
  • Micro and Macro Economics
  • Business Strategy and Game Theory
  • Marketing and Marketing Analysis
  • Business Process Optimization
  • Business Systems Analysis

How Long Will It Take?

The standard duration for a Bachelor of Business Science degree is four to five years, with an optional Masters usually taking an additional year. Third and final year Business Science students vie competitively for graduate placement contracts with large and small companies, but employment rates amongst Business Science graduates are often higher than the average.

What Are My Career Options?

Your options once you have graduated are very broad, and depend entirely on what sort of work you would like to be doing.  Common career choices include:

  • Management Consulting
  • Investment Banking (Analysis and Financial Modeling)
  • Software Design or Development
  • Project/Program Manager
  • Junior Management
  • Marketing Strategist

The list of applications for a degree in Business Science is very long, and if you’re creative you can even find new and innovative ways to make a career out of your skill set.

How Much Will I Earn?

Starting salaries for graduates vary depending on which field they go into.  A common career choice is Business Analysis, for which the pay scales, according to PayScale, Inc., are shown below.
