With a more narrow focus than the bachelor's degree, the master's degree focuses on developing specialized knowledge in a more specific field of study. While requirements vary according to the university, a U.S. master's degree usually requires 1-2 years of full time study after completion of the bachelor's degree and can take longer if the student studies part time.
Types of Master Degree Programs:
Like bachelor's degree programs, master's programs are typically divided into two groups: Master of Science and Master of Arts.
- Master of Arts (M.A.): a graduate degree in the humanities or social sciences consisting of a minimum of 30 semester hours of post-baccalaureate credit that may include a research based thesis.
- Master of Science (M.S.): a graduate degree in the hard sciences consisting of a minimum of 30 semester hours of post-baccalaureate credit that almost always includes a research based thesis.
Requirements for master's program can be strictly coursework, or strictly research, but are generally a mixture of both and act as a stepping-stone towards a doctoral study. In some programs, doctoral work begins right after completion of the bachelor's degree.
